The first scientific study on Yoga is considered to be in the book ‘A Treatis on the Yoga Philosophy’ in 1851. Since then there have been nearly one thousand scientific papers on Yoga. The number of these studies have increased in correlation with the popularity of yoga from the second half of the 20th century.

What is yoga?

For me, practising yoga is taking time to honour my mind and body. It provides a pause from the excitement and busyness of life, making space to explore who and where I am right now. The meaning of the word Yoga is ‘Unity’ or ‘Union’ and it comes from the work yuj which means ‘To Join’ or ‘Yolk’. ‘Yoga is all about the integration between head, heart and hand. What we feel, what we say, and what we do.’ (Sevanti 2016).
